Intermediate Air Quality Scientist / Engineer

DURATION: Full-time, permanent (5 days per week)

LOCATION: Remote (Ontario or Newfoundland-based candidates preferred)

TENTATIVE START DATE: To be determined

RENUMERATION: $80,000 to $120,000 annually, plus benefits and employee ownership opportunities

IEC is seeking an Intermediate Air Quality Scientist / Engineer with experience supporting mining, energy, and large industrial projects. The successful candidate will contribute to air quality assessments for regulatory approvals, environmental impact assessments, and permitting, and will work closely with senior technical staff and multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

Duties will vary by project and may include:

  • Preparation of air quality and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories for mining, energy, and industrial facilities

  • Air dispersion modelling using AERMOD, CALPUFF, or similar models to support:

    • Environmental Impact Assessments (EAs / EAs under federal and provincial regimes)

    • Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECAs) or Environmental Activity and Sector Registrations (EASRs)

    • Environmental permitting for new facilities, expansions, and operational changes

  • Preparation and processing of meteorological data sets using AERMET, CALMET, or equivalent tools

  • Analysis and interpretation of meteorological monitoring data, ambient air quality monitoring data, and stack testing data

  • Interpretation of model results relative to provincial and federal air quality criteria

  • Preparation of clear, defensible technical reports, figures, and supporting documentation

  • Support of project delivery activities including:

    • Proposal writing and budgeting support

    • Supporting project management and quality assurance activities

    • Coordination with internal technical disciplines

    • Client communication and technical support

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related discipline

    • An advanced degree and/or professional designation (P.Eng., M.Sc., M.Eng., Ph.D.) is considered an asset

  • 5 to 10 years of consulting experience in air quality or atmospheric science

  • Demonstrated experience working on mining, energy, and/or large industrial projects

  • Hands on experience with:

    • Development of air emissions inventories

    • Air dispersion modelling with AERMOD and CALPUFF

    • Meteorological data preparation with AERMET and CALMET

    • Analysis and interpretation of monitoring data

  • Strong working knowledge of:

    • Canadian federal and provincial air quality regulations and guidelines

    • Environmental impact assessments, permitting and approvals processes

  • Experience with projects in remote or northern settings is considered an asset

  • Experience supporting integrated EA teams (air quality noise, climate, risk, effects assessment) is an asset

  • Experience supporting air quality monitoring programs is an asset

  • Experience with noise and vibration modelling and assessments is an asset

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

    • Advanced Excel skills and basic programming experience (e.g., Python, VBA) are beneficial

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently in a remote environment

  • Valid driver’s license (travel to project sites may be required occasionally)
